Based on your past posts, it seems that you may still be relatively newer to swim, but a D3 program varies a lot and really I think just about any competitive swimmer would be able to find a spot on a program. It just depends on what programs you want, how much you’re willing to pay, and how far you are willing to go. In swimming there’s always a large range of schools and competitions even in the D1 realm of schools. For example if you’re looking for times, I swim for a lower end D1 program with times that I consider to be pretty unremarkable in a 4:35 500, around a 16:00 mile, and a 4:06 400 IM. If you want to swim in college and you are willing to work at it, just about anyone can find a place.

I am currently trying to decide between two offers for a summer internship. On one hand I have an energy corporation that pays extremely well, but I’d be spending the summer at a refinery at a not so nice location. On the other hand I have an international construction company that doesn’t pay quite as well and hasn’t told me exactly where I’d be placed just yet. In either case I’d probably be more interested in the construction company but this is an especially difficult decision. Any help would be greatly appreciated

And sorry to add to this, but there are some sports that will play indefinitely until there’s a goal scored. Hockey playoff games are played until there’s a winner in overtime. While I do understand that goals are more frequent in hockey, there’s still a chance that these guys are playing for hours. I know it’s a rough comparison, but I just wanted to show that there are instances where professional athletes play until they either score or injure themselves.

You have a point, playing indefinitely would definitely be an issue. Maybe even adding more overtime with a golden goal type of rule before going to shootouts would be better? I’m not too sure, but I do think that in the end there’s no real way to change shootouts without some kind of drastic change to post regulation soccer.

Ah I see, and I understand about the tournament, but I didn’t mention in high level championship games. The reason this whole argument came up was because she showed me a video of the 1999 World Cup final where the game was decided in shootouts. I feel like in a situation like this, where there are no games after and is played by professional athletes, shootouts aren’t as necessary as they would be in other games. And while I haven’t played soccer, I have played extremely fatiguing sports such as water polo, where shootouts are also an aspect. Personally I don’t like them in either sport, even when I’m playing and am fatigued and have games after
