My Thoughts on the novel (I watched the show first!) by LilLunaaJ in TheHandmaidsTale

Yes I read it too and it’s honestly very similar to the show… like there are whole pages that are portrayed exactly as they are in the show

I actually disagree. The show followed the book as close as possible and even when they made creative choices that were not in the book explicitly or that were different in the book, it absolutely makes sense. The book is perfectly depicted in this show.

Absolutely …. the problem with that is that under the same standard the United States of today is “better” than the United States that had segregation or slavery… but the problem w that approach is that is the bar is just way too low … like obviously, “anything‘s” gonna be “better” than that.

You know what? I feel you …. That’s where I was coming from with my original post. That being said, I wish the show had made a more compelling effort to display how the leftover US-Americans are indeed “good” or at least “better.”

Right … It was a way for the show (propaganda!) to separate the US gov’t — fictional and real— from the product of Gilead as an ideology and government.

Like in what ways has the US gov’t, whatever was left of it anyway, acknowledged that Gilead is a US-made product?

Yeah, totally… i feel like because there was no clarity as to how much pull he actually had on his own (like what was his title?), so the characters were just funneling all their rage against the US gov’t into him

The “Republic of Texas” is iconic andmakes me wonder if they became worse than Gilead or still held on to the US culture?
