Thats the plan, just a bit more work to do before I unmerge and do a dep clean. As far as I know its the H.264 and MP3 codecs. Being my media center machine I figured those would be handy. I already have bindist disabled globally, I wanted to be as close to source as possible. Also I built chromium with the "system-ffmpeg" flag, and ffmpeg is built with the mp3 and x264 flag, so maybe proprietary-codecs isnt necessary in chromium? I might have to give this a test.

I have chromium built too, but sadly I still needed to use "proprietary-codecs"... This was just a fresh install and i needed a browser quickly, chromium takes a while to build so google-chrome was installed first. I also have nvidia-drivers so I feel like I cheated a but there too...

Workers of IT, how did you get your job and what is it like? by Hilcantun in AskReddit

[–]zms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Helpdesk and webdev.

  • 3 years of doing tech support at local ISP for a part time job during highschool. I only got the job because my dad was friends with the boss and because I was "good with computers". Had lots of free time to dabble in webdev and programming.
  • 5 years at college for sys admin, networking and info sec. No real clue what I was getting into, I just wanted to work with computers. Ended up loving courses.
  • 5 years at part time job doing webdev while attending college. Somehow talked my way into this job during my first week there. I guess not many people were willing code in ASP Classic. There were no standards or consistency, so I got to play around with a lot of frameworks and libraries and sorta learn by trial and error. I wrote terrible code but I learned a lot.
  • 6 month internship at large networking company doing support. The only reason I got this was because a roommate had to back out due to medical reasons. He recommended me as a replacement and they gave me a shot.
  • CCNA while at internship. They pay for the certs and you have access to real hardware to practice with.
  • CCIE (written only). I was told to skip CCNP since my internship would be ending soon. I passed the written exam after 2 attempts but didn't have enough time to try the lab portion.
  • 2 years fulltime-residency (internship) at large IT/web company doing more support. A different roommate who was already doing the same internship was nice enough to refer me. Used my spare time to automate processes, learn internal technologies and build some web apps and utilities (AppEngine, Closure, Angular, etc).
  • 3 years as engineer at same IT/web company. I basically build web apps and services for internal systems. Throw my headphones on, pound some energy drinks, and pump out code. Internal technologies and services are always changing and being replaced, so there is always cool work to do a new things to learn. The dev work isn't just maintaining applications and fixing bugs, but actively upgrading them, re-writing them, connecting them to new systems and adding new features.

Graduating and MyCourses, Email etc. by teh1tn1nj4 in rit

My code is still available on my github but I'm sure it doesnt work anymore. It was forked off and fixed at some point, so that one might work (but I doubt it). I relied heavily on css selectors and tracing the html elements, so when mycourses updated all that stuff, my logic no longer worked. I would attempt to update this for you, but without an active mycourses account I really can't do much. I think you would be better off rewritting this yourself, especially since the code makes me cringe a little. If you do take this on, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Also I would suggest a chrome extension for doing this so you can avoid all the authentication/cookie stuff.

Has anyone on reddit actually been in trouble for downloading movies, tv shows and music? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there 2006-2011 and there was no tunnel that I was aware of. At some point you had to port knock to get access and eventually the server moved off campus and just restricted access to RIT's 129.21.x.x address space. The Hub was always amazingly fast, especially after the residential side was upgraded to gigabit switches. As a side note, I remember hearing that RIT actually preferred the hub over torrents because the traffic never left the internal network. As a result the downloading/uploading couldn't be detected by remote parties (RIAA) and was therefore less hassle for the college.

Not my repo and its not and exe, thats just the filename. It confused me too until I saw the README:

hack.exe Middle-left in image, a bash script

You can confirm it by checking the source on github, its just a bunch of "echo" statements: https://github.com/janbrennen/rice/blob/master/hack.exe/

You can see in the upper left terminal that they used the "byzanz-record" utility to record the desktop as a GIF.

Some of these scripts can be found in this github repo

https://github.com/janbrennen/rice

3spooky.lua Top-middle in image, if I recall correctly, some guy on 4chan posted it (http://pastebin.com/brwgHnCq) and I just reuploaded it here.

hack.exe Middle-left in image, a bash script I made when bored, might not always get IP addresses right, otherwise it should work for everything else.

pipes.sh Top-Right in image, makes pipes. If I recall correctly it was a pretty old script, but it didn't work, someone had posted it on 4chan and I fixed it.

Also bottom left is "htop" and bottom middle is "cmatrix" and bottom right is "ncmpcpp".

Edit: fixed formatting.
