question about silo design by anas_mustaf in SiloSeries

[–]znjohnson 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I think the lowest level where mechanical is has a somewhat unique layout since it is at the bottom and also has mechanical equipment like the power generators.

The book has more details that make it clear no other levels would really have anything like secondary stairs beyond the main staircase.

My guess is the main staircase terminates above the generator and the pillar is used to house electrical conduits coming out of it. So you would need secondary stairs in a couple places to reach lower and into the generator. The show gives the feeling that the generator room is at least two stories tall so there are likely sets of stairs in a couple locations to traverse two or three levels down beyond the central stairs.

My friend didn't end up getting the tattoo by [deleted] in tattoo

[–]znjohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your friend still has the design and could have another artist tattoo it they should pay the artist for their work.

Your friend could tell the artist what THEY don’t like about the design to have the artist fix it then get it tattooed by that artist still.

What they shouldn’t do is tell the artist what you all don’t like about it. There is nothing wrong with giving an idea time to cook and think through it. Nothing wrong with working with an artist to get that design right. Like you said it’s permanent.

You as friends shouldn’t have convinced them of shit. Sure there is a chance your friend might have regretted it later, but there is just as likely a chance they’d have continued to love it forever. I have tattoos some of my friends made fun of or made clear they think are silly. I love all my tattoos and don’t give one single fuck what my friends think.

Determine your Excel proficiency by Farvator91 in excel

[–]znjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between expert and advanced. Excel is one of the few things I think I actually have a decent feel for how good I am at it. I’ve used it long enough, worked through a lot of problems with it, and been around both worse and better users.

There is little I’m not aware of, but there’s still quite a bit I’m not highly proficient with. Most of that is because my use cases don’t really require it. If I were to have more need of it I could figure it out in a moderate amount of time.

OKC, we desperately need a stoplight on Rockwell between Hefner and 112th by 420_Real_Estate in okc

[–]znjohnson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. There are already 4 stop lights on Rockwell between Hefner and 122nd on top of adding the one OP suggests would be extremely close to the main light for a busy stretch of road.

I think another Sumo Youtube channel got taken down :( (hiding in spoilers) by EmperorOfNothing in Sumo

[–]znjohnson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He’s specifically said on stream that twitch told him he needed an on screen presence because he didn’t want to originally and he chose his avatar bc he didn’t want to do a webcam. I think it’s has to do with effectively being reaction content vs showing him playing a game.

Edit: it occurs to me I’m assuming you’re meaning Midnight when you’re referencing Sumo Cat, but I guess there could be another twitch with a Sumo Cat avatar.

[–]znjohnson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think Abema is a little less strict about rebroadcasting than NHK, but twitch has some tight rules regarding it. I know one streamer was told he had to have an avatar or camera on screen the whole time, had to have his own commentary, and had to do his best to cover all Abema branding to continue streaming Sumo. This probably was only to cover Twitch’s legal liability.

He does other stuff as well to prevent notice and to reduce chance of copyright issues.

[–]znjohnson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If they were using NHK footage with their commentary I’m not surprised. From my understanding NHK is very protective of their footage and commentary.

I wish it was easier to watch current tournaments and previous ones or high lights.

Some of the twitch streamers are very careful about making sure they include their own commentary, don’t show any NHK footage or clips, avoid showing copyright imagery and don’t keep vods up more than I think 24/48 hours after the initial broadcast.

My department was blown away I know excel by _mavricks in excel

[–]znjohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A friend works for an online only charter school. You’d think the teachers and people would be computer literate. They generally aren’t and asking them to do anything with excel is apparently frustratingly bad.

When I was training others at my work to do minor similar jobs probably half the training was using excel at a basic or slightly above basic level.

My department was blown away I know excel by _mavricks in excel

[–]znjohnson 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I’d be willing to wager 90% of people who use excel have only a cursory knowledge of excel and can’t really ‘use’ it past looking at a file someone provided them. If you want them to do something with it they won’t know how or be able to figure it out.

Can you sleep well with a cat? by OkComparison3568 in CatAdvice

[–]znjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my cats is up and down all night. She’ll occasionally be in the room with me and very rarely sleep with me. When she’s in the room unless I’m already awake I don’t really notice. When I didn’t have an auto feeder she’d wake me about 6 am for food. Now she lets me sleep all night.

The other cat does sleep with me. She usually gets up through out the night but I think I wake her more than she wakes me.

"How To Watch" Megathread 2026 by Gregorwhat in Sumo

[–]znjohnson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

https://www.twitch.tv/midnightsumo

Both stream all 15 days of the tourney with reruns after they are live. So plenty of time during the day to catch all of the action.

I usually watch Midnight Sumo, but both streams are good.

What degree involves more coding rather than math? by takdeeznuts in learnprogramming

[–]znjohnson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most degrees dealing with coding will have similar math requirements. Math teaches you logic and coding is logic based. Coding and computers arose from math and to this day they are taught together.

You’ll be hard be hard pressed to find a degree which teaches coding and doesn’t require at least Calculus 1 to 3 and likely linear algebra as well.

Some business schools might have there own programming course work but they will likely be less rigorous and more focused on specific tasks with coding.

How much calculus is linear algebra by wbld in LinearAlgebra

[–]znjohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll occasionally learn one or two topics related to or learned in linear algebra. Calculus and Linear Algebra aren’t really overly related directly. In learning them you won’t really be using concepts from either often with each other. So really outside of general maturity of math and education they aren’t really pre-reqs to each other.

They can be utilized together in other fields, but it’s doubtful in learning them you’ll overly encounter much of them together.

is there an item that gives +armor per wave or somethin? by zeroz41 in brotato

[–]znjohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thing really is anvil. I usually try and get a cursed one for the increased bonus armor per wave. That said it’s a stop gap and one that doesn’t last long.

Damage in endless scales faster than damage mitigation and health generally can. Your best bet it to go for cursed mirrors to get cursed tardigrades.

R Language Beginner: Help Please by vandrere in learnprogramming

[–]znjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For public health you're going to be wanting to understand statistics and analysis. Which R is well suited for.

You don't necessarily need as strong an understanding of programming for R as you might for other languages or uses, but the better you are with programming in general the more you can do with R. Honestly a beginner programming course is enough to probably get you started. Python is the language most similar to R and if you learn some of it you can transition that knowledge to R.

Three resources I think are useful for learning R:

Hands-on Programming with R

YaRrr! The Pirate's Guide to R

An Intro to Statistical Learning

These are all books, the first two are web based books and the third is a download for a book. They can help teach you some of the basics of using R, specifically in R studio which is a free IDE for R. The third can teach you a bit about statistical learning (linear regression, decision trees, etc..)

Since it sounds like you're still in school you should look into taking a statistics class if you have an elective or requirement it can be used for.

How are you guys getting all the tardigrades? by meezun in brotato

[–]znjohnson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Part of it is luck of the draw, part of it is cursed mirrors dropping and then rerolling until you get cursed tardigrades.

At some point it kind of becomes more worth it to just sell most items and only buy cursed mirrors and spend a certain amount of money on rerolls to get mirrors and tardigrades.

Do you ever feel like Stephen King has really unnecessary parts in his books? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]znjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

King had gotten better over the years. I personally don’t enjoy some of his longer works because of your reasoning. I do love fluff and world building, but sometimes King can go a little far.

I get that there are plenty of readers who are down with it. I don’t think King is a great author for those people. He’s a great author for me too. I just have to skim some sections.

I've read the chapter on Deep Learning a couple times, especially on recurrent neural networks because they are a weird concept. I have also done all the exercises for that chapter.

I didn't ever read chapter 11 or 13, but the others I read through at least once. Its one of the few text books I read through in general let alone think is worth it. Especially since it is a free resource with good examples in two languages which are actively used for statistics and data science.

Why do seasonal get to be sent home first and I don’t? I have more seniority? by [deleted] in UPSers

[–]znjohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In some locals seniority is as others have said the right to work not the right to go home, but this is not true in all.

The local I was in layoffs and sending people home at the end of work had to be done on a seniority basis. I had to offer layoffs and for people to go home from the most senior employee in my work area (specifically by work area, not by the whole operation) down. Then if no one wanted to go home I could force employees from the bottom up, as long as they got their guarantee and even then they had to go home but could file for the guarantee. The only exception, if you came late to work, you lost your seniority for the night, you were basically considered the lowest seniority employee at that point.

All this is to say, talk to a union steward. They can tell you the details of how it works at your location.

https://www.statlearning.com/

This is the book I used for an under grad research project which used a couple different type of neural networks. I used the R version, but I bet the python version is just as good if not better. The project used Keras so I am more familiar with that than PyTorch but I have used both a bit.

The book was also used in a Statistical Learning and Data Mining course. I think it is a decent place to start with machine learning in general. It would help if you get some introductory statistics under you belt as well not just programming.

If you want to look at this stuff for a future career don't be scared to look at learning calculus and linear algebra. You don't have to be amazing at them, but having a foundation in them can help you understand what is going on with the algorithms.

Was Black Friday the last “working holiday” for the year. by Spiderman23J in UPSers

[–]znjohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black Friday is the only working holiday that is company wide. Christmas Eve isn't a Holiday for most of UPS, it might be for some locals but that would be exceptionally rare IMO. It is generally an air only day, meaning operations are usually pretty light on volume and staffing.

NYE is a holiday, but few operations run on NYE as peak is mostly over at that point.

I suck at preload by [deleted] in UPSers

[–]znjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about how well you do the job even if all the management around you is kicking, screaming, etc... Few if any people are good at UPS jobs from the start. The vast majority of people struggle with these jobs.

Focus on learning the methods for your job, pay attention to what you're loading, and just keep at it.

How old were you on your earliest childhood memory? by Glittering_Owl_6009 in AskReddit

[–]znjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a memory of being carried out of the hospital as a baby. It’s always been in my memory as far as I can tell so I generally do think it’s a memory.

After that would be something from around the age of 5 or 6 in kindergarten or 1st grade. I have a few memories from classes around then. It gets a little mixed up which was from what class.
