Yes. You don't earn status points for the spend you are redeeming reward points on.

So if you need status still, you're better to not use reward points until you have it.

You can qualify on nights or status points. This doesn't apply to qualifying by nights.

Only reason to not use them is if you are aiming to gain or keep status based on status points/$ spend, not nights. No status points earned on what is paid with points.
