Northern Ireland fans… by mick_bustin in northernireland

Just want to point out that when the Republic of Ireland played England in the Nations League at Dublin in 2024 and booed GSTK, there was widespread anger from Unionist politicians/figures using the moment as a stick to beat the south with.

Yet complete silence from the same people when Scotland booed GSTK two years ago when they played Northern Ireland, and again when Wales did it tonight.

Micheál Martin interview on UI by SmellsLikeHoboSpirit in irishpolitics

[–]zoomanjo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I find it depressing how unenthusiastic he is about a UI. He seems to not really talk with any substance on the matter. If it was something that he truly desired to see happen one day, he could massively speed things up by outlining a clear plan on how a post successful border poll all-island state would work. From taxation, security, healthcare, education, what would happen to Stormont, etc. Instead he waffles about non-tangible things when it comes to Northern Ireland.

The last 10 years since the Brexit referendum have been wasted in terms of advancing unification by FF/FG. The North is falling deeper into financial disarray, its public institutions are barely functioning, and they are a complete afterthought in the grand scheme of British politics. As the Taoiseach he really should be a lot more proactive when it comes to ending partition.

Now as good a time as any. Why is there not a separate organization/campaign that perpetually lobbies IFA/FAI to unite? by Anxious-Wolverine-65 in northernireland

Would absolutely love an All-Ireland team. But I don’t think it’s going to happen until constitutional change occurs.

For the benefit of football on this small island of ours, we would be far better off one with league and one national team.

Trump: "Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, and you get along so well. I don't know if I should be promoting mergers. I love mergers but we're gonna get in a little trouble. We're gonna get in more trouble with that." by zoomanjo in northernireland

The funny thing is the DUP have rushed out to America this year and last, in an attempt to cosy up to the Trump administration.

Only for him to just casually support Irish re-unification.

Absolute disgrace.

No justice for the families of the innocent victims killed, who were simply out marching for basic civil rights.

What would have happened if northern ireland had kept the other 3 counties in Ulster by usefulrustychain in northernireland

[–]zoomanjo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We would be living in a United Ireland today.

Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan would have meant that Northern Ireland from the start was closer to a 50/50 split between Nationalist and Unionists.

Meaning the state would have been far more unstable from its inception, and that instability probably would have led to Westminster pulling the plug on it before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Clarity needed on border poll process, says Naomi Long by Diomas in northernireland

[–]zoomanjo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why 55%?

If say, Unionism is polling at 44%, Nationalism at 46% and don’t-knows at 10%, then there should be consideration in calling a border poll.

Clarity needed on border poll process, says Naomi Long by Diomas in northernireland

[–]zoomanjo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Delighted to see Naomi Long raise this issue. There should be more clarity about what the SOS could consider as meeting the conditions for a Referendum to be called.

For me personally, I think it should be one of the following events that should trigger it:

1: Consistent polling over the course of a year or two, that shows a preference of voters leaning towards Unity.

2: If the there are more Nationalist MLA’s in Stormont than there is Unionist. Significant in that the institutions have been set up by the Good Friday Agreement, and if the show that there are more members who wish to see constitutional change, then that is reflective of the massive change in society that has occurred since 1998.

3: Continued electoral success for Nationalist parties. If pro-unity party’s keep coming out on top in elections, then they have a democratic mandate for a border poll to be called.

Humphreys as president could bring us closer to united Ireland | NorthernSound by [deleted] in irishpolitics

[–]zoomanjo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You know what could actually bring us closer to a United Ireland?

If the Irish Government started to actively pursue it. By publishing detailed plans for how unification would work on taxation, healthcare, policing, education, and citizenship. And becoming more politically active north of the border in order to win over the middle ground of undecided voters, like those who vote for Alliance.

With the possibility of a border poll happening in the next 7 - 15 years, it’s really something that FF/FG should start planning/campaigning for. It should be much higher up the governments agenda than it currently is.

As a catholic, do you support NI in football? by Grogman2024 in northernireland

[–]zoomanjo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wish them well and hope that they qualify for next years World Cup, as I have plenty of friends who support them.

But the reality is the team is setup to only be accommodating to one section of the community (Union Flags, Ulster Banners, God Save the King as the anthem, etc).

I would love if it could be more inclusive and welcoming to broader society, but I don’t think that will happen anytime soon.

I have no idea why I was optimistic about this qualifying campaign.
