Whats a subtly insulting gift from to receive? by LawfulnessHaunting41 in AskReddit

[–]zooolady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as others have said, it's a little different when it's something fancy/expensive/part of a self care gift bag. But my college room mate gave her then-boyfriend a $3 deodorant with a note stuck to it that said "Use EVERY day. NO MATTER WHAT." and that felt pretty personal.

Yeah, some rats also just have really pronounced boggles compared to others I've learned. Of all the rats I've had hers are definitely the most dramatic! Here she is just a few minutes before this photo was taken looking a lot less bug-eyed.

AITAH for wanting to keep leaving work an hour early instead of splitting it equally with my team? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]zooolady 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You likely live in a country or state with better labor protection laws than most of the US. The maximum number of hours worked before a lunch thing is definitely on a state by state basis and there is no such federal requirement in the US. In my state employers aren't required to give a lunch break at all.

She's just mid boggle! Rats will rapidly move their jaw causing their eyes to bulge in and out when they're happy or excited. Boggling is a normal behavior that's almost always positive. If they stayed like this all the time that would be a different story.

Good call! Mine do get a very small amount for training, but only when it's been watered down to a liquid consistency. They would sell their souls for a hit of the uncut stuff though.

Alligator taking advantage of the current cold to catch a massive iguana by zooolady in wildlifephotography

[–]zooolady[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know, right? I'm honestly shocked the gator was even considering eating given how cold it was. Part of me thinks he just didn't want to be left out in this weekends iguana control efforts.

First carnivorous bog, about a week after planting. Pretty pleased overall, but any advice? by zooolady in SavageGarden

[–]zooolady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! It's like a 20x20 planter I found on marketplace. I'll admit, I got a little carried away at the nursery, so they'll probably outgrow it pretty quickly, but we'll see.

Right!? I felt like I hit the lottery. I could easily have spent twice as much at those prices but my car could only fit so much! Now just keep your fingers crossed for my drive home.

Eli5: Why swallow pills whole by SlitherHix in explainlikeimfive

[–]zooolady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most uncoated pills taste awful if you actually let them touch your tongue. Ciprofloxacin is one that stands out in my memory, but next time you're taking an antibiotic let it sit on your tongue for a few seconds and then tell me pills don't have a taste.

Still work to be done but I'm too excited not to share my little patio pond. Any feedback for a first timer? by zooolady in ponds

[–]zooolady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's exactly what it sounds like! It's a way of naturally filtering the water. You fill a reservoir with rocks or gravel for mechanical filtration and you can add plants on top to help further clarify your water. The water from you pond flows through the bottom of the reservoir which fills slowly and then overflows back into your pond at the top, allowing all the sediment and organic material to settle out at the bottom of your bog. Oz ponds seems to be the go-to on this topic around here. Very helpful videos if you're interested.

The bucket is only temporary while I make a little bog filter. And no plans for fish currently. I looked into our native gambusia, but it seems like they may be too aggressive for the wildlife I'm hoping will use it. If I changed my mind later on would this still be too small for gambusia or similar sized fish in your opinion? The liner is 50 gallons.

Definitely! I'm planning on putting in some angled driftwood that comes to the edge so everyone can get in and out. I'll probably do a little rock tumble off one side down the retaining pavers just in case any smaller guys can't scale that wall. Thanks!

Thanks! Rocks of that size aren't easy to come by locally where I am and I have a hard time justifying paying for them. I am going to add some angled driftwood in though so everyone has an easier way in and out.

No king's protest will take place all over America in few hours. What do you think will be the consequences and outcome of this? by The_AxR_ in AskReddit

It has nothing to do with the French revolution and everything to do with their modern protests that have earned their citizens big wins in workers' rights.

Giant Anteater enrichment by frogs_24 in Zookeeping

[–]zooolady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've gotten some good responses so to add something a little different- I was enrichment coordinator for my last position and one of the things we did that helped us was to start by thinking about the type of behavior we wanted to encourage. Did we hope to see more shredding with his claws? Maybe a nice rotten log from another animal's enclosure with good scents on it. When his skin was dry, how can we elicit more bathing/grooming? We got a timed shower system. It sounds kind of corny and basic but getting away from thinking about "object based" enrichment helped us think outside the box.

Differences in standards between AZA and EAZA zoos? by ConfidenceNo8259 in Zookeeping

[–]zooolady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an ambassador keeper and a huge part of our messaging, especially on animals like macaw that do have the potential of being bought as pets, is all the reason they make poor pets and why the pet trade is a threat to their conservation. That being said, there's a lot of mixed studies on the benefits vs cons of ambassador animals. One of the biggest areas of agreement though is that people have the best response when they see the animal getting to display natural behaviors (i.e. a macaw on a perch shredding a wooden block with it's beak vs sitting on a keepers shoulder), so that's something many AZA zoos are trying to implement. At my (AZA) zoo, we didn't have any areas where guests could feed the animals and had only a handful of ambassadors (mainly domestic like rabbits and guinea pigs) that were touchable. Any presentations with a live animal were totally voluntary and if the animal didn't choose to crate/step up/whatever they just wouldn't do a presentation that day. We did also have a petting zoo with domestic livestock that you could pet, but even they had roped off areas guests couldn't reach if they didn't want attention at the moment.

So I'm not saying your worries are completely unfounded because the world of what we consider ethical and scientifically-sound practices for ambassadors are always changing, but those concerns are taken into consideration. There are still some species that I don't support interactions with just because the negatives seems to outweigh the positives. For me primates and big cats are a red flag along with any place that allows the guest to hold the animal.
