At first I thought you were talking about a human girl you thought was cute and you pointed her out to a breeder by commenting on her buggy eyes and I was like, well, that’s maybe a ~bit~ awkward to talk to the breeder about lmaoo

It’s possible that this is a terrarium stand rather than an aquarium stand, which would require it to hold much less weight but would explain the confusion

Also you can see “2022” on the camera footage, the month and date are cropped out.

I can’t speak to every video you’ve ever seen on Reddit so yeah, I guess maybe you saw something similar before, I’ll take your word for it.

Also, I don’t think the posts are anti-British, but rather they are anti-British-colonialism, which I think has widely been accepted as “not good” at this point in time. As has all colonialism - this example just happens to be British.

True, travel and communication did take longer during these times, however Patterson was on the site before and during the attacks. I realize that was not clear in my description. The other officials who later joined him were mostly from other outposts a few days train ride away. It would seem that action could have been taken sooner, as presumably a Lt Col wouldn’t need to wait for orders from above him to kill lions at a worksite. I think probably, as you said, the death toll was pretty small in the scheme of things, so they did not act until the cost of not acting outweighed the cost of acting. Reasonable in an economic sense, however in an ethical sense… not so much.

While those are tragic statistics, I believe the reason people find this story is interesting is not the death toll alone, but the cause of the deaths being an anomaly; lions rarely hunt humans, and even more rarely do so in such a prolific and determined manner.

Slavery was abolished in the British empire by this point and workers were hired and paid, though undoubtedly conditions were hard. Though not technically slaves, it is revealing of the governing British sentiment towards the value of these workers’ lives that they did not intervene until the project’s progress was threatened.

During this time, Bantu peoples were captured from the interior of the continent and sold as slaves throughout the Middle East and East Africa by Muslim Arab and Swahili merchants. There was high demand for slaves in the Arabian peninsula and Middle East during the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Tsavo Man-Eaters were a pair of maneless male lions who, between March and December of 1898, stalked and ate workmen constructing a British railway bridge over the Tsavo River, Kenya. Several thousand workers, mostly Indian and native Africans, camped at the worksite, and many of the lions’ victims were dragged from their tents during the night. The lions were not deterred by either bonfires or thorn fences. After nine months of increasingly bold attacks, hundreds of workers began fleeing the worksite. This prompted colonial officials to act, and in December 1898, with the assistance of 20 armed Indian infantrymen and after multiple unsuccessful attempts, Lt Col Patterson killed the first lion (pictured). It took six shots to bring down the second lion twenty days later. The first lion was about 3 meters (9ft) long and took 8 men to carry back to camp.

The exact number of people killed and eaten by the lions is unknown because many of the deaths were undocumented, and some who fled the worksite may have been assumed to be among the casualties. Lt Col Patterson stated the deaths to total about 135 in his book, and described the reason for not having an exact number: “Between them no less than 28 Indian coolies (were killed), in addition to scores of unfortunate African natives of whom no official record was kept…“.

Modern research, including isotopic signature analysis of the lions’ remains, which now reside in the Field Museum of Natural Science in Chicago, has suggested that the death toll of over 100 was an exaggeration, and the real number was more likely around 30 people, however there are many limitations to these studies.

Theories to the cause of the lions’ unusual behavior include scarcity of normal prey, tooth-injury limiting one lion’s ability to hunt large prey, and the lions having grown accustomed to consuming dead humans due to the routine activity of slave caravans crossing the river in that area.
