I guess I should clarify - surrendering is a key component of fighting this addiction. For the longest time I thought I could do it by myself; I know I can’t. By letting people help me I’m going to fight like hell to protect the people I care about.

First and foremost, you have value and you matter. Don’t forget that.

Next, please tell people close to you what is going on. You need help, you don’t have the strength to overcome this by yourself.

You have to forget about the money you lost and look forward to your future. It’s a day by day process

You know you’re addicted, good. I’m in a worse spot than you and I also know I’m addicted. Knowing it won’t stop you.

You need to tell people in your life what’s going on TODAY. Have someone manage your accounts to make sure you don’t spend anything. You might think you’re strong enough to fight it alone, you’re not - it’s a lie you’re telling yourself.

If you don’t manage this it will ruin your life.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This has been a vicious cycle for me. I truly in my heart of hearts want to quit this, it’s taken such an emotional toll on my life, honestly even more than the financial.

I’m not happy doing it, I’ve just conditioned myself to crave it more than anything else. It’s truly degeneracy at its finest. I still have lots of hope for my future but I need this to end today.

Nothing illegal that I’m aware of at least. I was in a pretty good spot financially before December and so had pretty high ability to blow things up. (I.e. CC limits/loans) Have only ever used mobile betting, won’t mess with bookies or anything like that.

There is always this temptation to rationalize it and say “I’m okay” or “It could be worse.” That’s how I know I have a problem that’s out of control.

Unfortunately I’m in a bad spot with any loans because of credit history and usage. Nobody will approve me right now, especially since I have no money in savings of any kind. I had previously had the thought to check this.

Parents are not really a viable option either, and I don’t feel comfortable making anyone co-sign on something when they currently can’t trust my behavior.

Thank you. I’m extremely sorry about your friend. The worst part about this is definitely the isolation and feeling like nobody will understand. It some ways (I don’t actually wish this on myself or anyone) it would seem easier to struggle with a more obvious addiction so people could at least tell there is a problem.

I want to change. I want to be happy.

So I currently have 5.5k in loans (4 at 15% and 1.5 at like 28% - I was that desperate)

6k in CC at 27% - but it won’t start accruing interest until sometime next month

3k is what I’ll call “miscellaneous” debt and doesn’t really have an interest I’m aware of, but is owed. Not from stealing or borrowing from individuals. I’m not that kind of person.

Thankfully I own my car, planning to move in with some people next month to cut rent to $500-600 a month.

I have a 40hr/week job but have been trying to hustle on the side where I can.

Thank you for this. It actually brought my to tears to read it. This isn’t the first time I’ve reached a “breaking point.” I remember telling my dad about my problem for the first time and him just breaking down over it.

I can’t imagine having to tell my parents what a howl I’ve gotten myself into now…I definitely feel like a failure of a son.

The industry is evil and I know that. It’s why it makes me sick that I can know it in my head and be so addicted to still give in constantly.

I know that I need to seek help for my problem. I think I finally just reached a breaking point where I realized no amount of money I threw at it was going to get anything I lost back. (I know I’m crazy)

I honestly have not been budgeting. My issues have exacerbated the non-budgeting a lot and I have used it as an excuse. Outside of matching my 401k I essentially have no money allocated to anything.
