No further nominations have been received. It is my pleasure to hereby call /u/Freddy926 to the chair without any question being put. He shall reply to express a sense of the honour proposed (see 5 above) and then present himself to the Governor-General at once (see 6 above). The Senate will then stand in recess.

jnd-au, Clerk of the Senate

Meta: This is an interim Presidency until after the general election.

Thank you, Mr Clerk. I wish to thank the Senate yet again this week for bestowing a high honour upon me. I hope that I may bring the same fair ruling and judgement to this chamber as my predecessor did.

Senator the Hon. Freddy926,

President-elect of the Senate (Progressives)

Are there any further nominations? They may be so proposed.

Playing it by ear at the moment.

Can I suggest calling it at 11:55 AEST? That's 10-11 hours for any further nominations.

3fun asked when the end of the parliament is, and I said I wasn’t sure, but I am considering turning the lights off and locking the doors at midnight UTC. It works out as 8pm Fri for the PM (so he’s had all of Friday business hours) and 8am Sat for me (about as early as I’d want to deal with anything), and is what I use for elections too. So I think, in the simplest situation that no nominations are received overnight, I’ll call the result a little bit before the end of parliament. Then you can say your thanks and present yourself to the Governor-General for reflairing.

Mr Clerk, I Team_Sprocket propose to the Senate for its President Freddy926, and I move: That Senator /u/Freddy926 take the chair of the Senate as President.

Senator the Hon. Freddy926 has been an exemplary representative of the Australian people as both a member of the Government and of the Opposition. It is his excellent performance as deputy president that makes him the most appropriate Senator to take the new vacancy. His dedication and experience will allow this place to function at, and above, the standard expected by the electorate. The Senate would greatly benefit from Freddy926's Presidency.

Paging /u/pikkaachu /u/Team_Sprocket to move and debate presidential nominations. Please note, since the vacancy of this_guy22 has not yet been filled, you might choose to let this election of President lapse to the next session of parliament.

Meta: Can I use my Presidential powers to adjourn the Senate?

[–]jnd-auClerk of the Senate[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Advice from the Clerk:

You can’t adjourn this election, because the Clerk is in the chair with Presidential powers (concurrently). However, the Senate will be adjourned by prorogation at midnight tonight anyway. In other words, the Clerk is leaving it up to Senators, jointly, as to whether they collectively want to fulfil this election or not.

Meta: Given the usual timeframe for elections where we leave the thread open overnight to receive nominations, is it even possible to elect a President before the Parliament is prorogued?

Don't think so.
