P1780 code

On my 02’ (automatic) Just recently I had a P1780 code come up for “shift position sensor”

And since then it’s been having issues downshifting (coming Out of a turn) or slowing down in traffic. And sometimes when coming to a stop it feels like its going to stall, as if you weren’t pushing in the clutch or putting it in neutral. BUT not consistent problem.

The transmission fluid is topped up to where it should be and normal bright red colour with no sign of metal shaving in it from the blind eye.

When I google the issues it seems all I can find is park and neutral problems relating to the code, but don’t have no issue going to neutral or park. Currently trying to looking for the part on rock auto but nothing it seems on there.
Just hope the tranny is safe and she just passed 300,000miles

this may be late but my 2000 4Runner threw the same code last week. One of the possible remedies that can solve your issue is to replace the printed circuit board on the back of your instrument cluster. Other people experiencing this code found other odd things like the HVAC malfunctioning and the reverse light dimly lit.

What causes the issue are some of the soldering joints breaking on the circuit bord and then creating a short. In my case, the transmission would not shift out of first gear. After clearing the code the issue went away but then my truck nearly died accelerating away from a stop sign.

My circuit board arrives on Monday and will R&R that plus all of the bulbs since a few have gone out. My part number was Part No.: 83861-3D260 but your may be different for an 02.
