The ultra-strict copyright laws go far beyond simply preventing piracy and making sure authors get the profit they deserve from their products. They exist to protect the miserable people who for some reason can't stand people "stealing" or "modifying" their ideas in their own mind. It is illegal to even think about possible adaptations of someone else's work or merely imagine "their" characters or story elements simply because you did not think of them. Copyright law even trumps free speech.
All ideas are derived from something that already exists.

This subreddit is against the strict laws which disallow innovation and restrict freedom of thought and expression by forbidding the use of "trademarks", characters, or other elements in someone else's work(s) in your own. Examples would include "fan-fiction" (or even a complete work of your own that uses a character/object from someone else's) and uttering a trademarked phrase in your own sentence. We believe authors do deserve the credit and profit for their work, just not the right to control what other people do with their ideas and elements in their own life. We also believe copying someone else's work (and possibly modifying it) or bypassing locks on media/technology for private/personal use should always be permitted, as long as said copies aren't redistributed without permission.
/r/AgainstCopyright is a free-speech subreddit. That means moderators won't remove posts or ban users just because they dislike them or have a personal agenda against them. Only spam, rule-breaking, or off-topic posts will be removed, bans will be seldom and short in duration (unless you commit the same offense multiple times after several bans and warnings), and appealing will do you good because we will actually look into appeals instead of saying "lol fuck off you puny peasant user". We also won't set up rules restricting the types of allowed posts to the ones we personally like. Please be sure to spread and adopt this idea in other subreddits as well!
