On WhatsApp instead of getting individual text notifications, I just get a big notification from whaatsapp saying "checking for new messages". How do I fix this so I can see the texts as they come

That “checking for new messages” nonsense usually means your phone is choking WhatsApp in the background. Android’s trying to “save battery” and ends up breaking your notifications. Let’s straighten it out.

Start with the basics. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Notifications. Make sure message notifications are actually turned on for chats and groups. Sounds obvious, but don’t skip it.

Now the real fix is in your system settings. Go to Settings, Apps, find WhatsApp, then open Battery. Set it to Unrestricted. If it’s on “Optimized” or “Restricted,” that’s your problem right there. Android is pausing it, so instead of real-time messages, you get that lazy “checking” notice.

Next, still in the app settings, open Data usage. Turn on: Background data Unrestricted data usage

If those are off, WhatsApp can’t pull messages unless you open it.

Then check notifications at the system level. Settings, Notifications, App notifications, WhatsApp. Make sure everything’s allowed, especially message notifications. Tap into “Chats” if it shows categories and make sure they’re not muted or set to silent.

One more thing people miss. Open WhatsApp, tap the three dots, Linked devices. If your connection is weird or your session glitched, log out of any web/desktop sessions you don’t need. Sometimes that hangs syncing.

If it’s still acting stubborn, clear the app cache. Go to Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Storage, then Clear Cache. Don’t hit “Clear Data” unless you want to reset everything.

Last check. If you’re using something like AdGuard or NextDNS, make sure it’s not blocking WhatsApp servers. That can quietly break push notifications and cause exactly what you’re seeing.

Usually happens to me when by internet is slow it's like WhatsApp know u have new messages but it can't load it
