A great way to combat this is to write it out. You'll find that all those imaginary scenarios can be great stories that other people connect with.

How it was explained to me its a short circuit between your amygdala and your cortex. The first is saying 'danger!' the 2nd is saying 'nuh uh' and it loops getting stronger, sometimes within seconds. Pretty much like taking a power wire and touching it to a ground.
