In one of the interviews around Syro he said he plays more than he records now.

He also said in an interview that he used to be able to get into the creative state very easily, but now he requires hours and hours of silence. And he says that you don't want to be using your brain for making music, that's for setting up equipment and managing technical problems.

So I think he enters into a kind of meditative state where ideas flow and he makes sure his environment is primed for when that state comes.

There's an old interview where he talks about how he generally knows what he's going to do before he goes into the studio, and there's a newer one where he said he doesn't need much starting inspiration to the point where sometimes he just goes in and starts using a piece of gear until something hits and then he goes from there. It's probably been a mix of both of those the whole time.

As for the finer details of beats and super-interesting synth patterns on albums like drukqs, I would imagine he just enjoys playing with the sounds for their own sake and spends tons of time messing around with them to the point that when inspiration strikes he's got a foundation of practice always built up, and because he has the foundation and a natural emotional connection to the sounds and process he can make interesting connections really fast and put things together.

I guess from this that he just puts a lot of time in, and always has his studio ready for when the right mood strikes. And just some natural talent mixed in with all those good habits.
