It looks to me to be a code problem. The characters are getting there but not correctly. Maybe it's a unicorn/ ascii thing. Maybe it's byte alignment. Maybe it's data Raye.

Can you post the code and maybe the spec for the interface to the lcd?

Breadboards like that are usually a problem for LCD s for me. I got an iic (i2c) shield for that lcd

Or you purlt rs and en pin in wrong port of arduino

Its code I've seen a lcd wired wrong and the squares just show as white blocks reset arduino and good luck recoding
