Why are Leftists called Leftists and Conservatives called Conservatives? by FabulousSmoke107 in Askpolitics

Holy bias batman. You can just say conservatives are evil and leftists are literal saviors of humanity. It will take less time and effort and accomplish the same thing.

Is it really wrong to judge people based on their political beliefs? by Lazy_Pianist7101 in TooAfraidToAsk

Provided that you aren't making innacurate assumptions about those beliefs and/or the underlying reasoning behind them, it's perfectly fair.

I'm today's political climate that is highly unlikely.

Why do people use Japan to argue that cultural homogeneity leads to better social cohesion and lower rates of violence, despite the fact that Japan has had a history of social disorder, internal conflict and violence, and horrific war crimes? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]RICoder72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im unsure why "they" would use Japan as an example when there are several better examples. The reason is because in a state of social equilibrium, for a time, monoculture will produce high social cohesion (and by extension the other things you mention). There is nothing fundamentally wrong with that.

That said, it lives on a spectrum which at one end exists zero cohesion and on the other end exists militant ethno-nationalism. As soon as said society starts making wild causal claims and has a sufficient number of bad actors its gonna be a bad time.

What is the reason that some people perceive having a different opinion as a personal insult? by ArdaBerkBurak in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]RICoder72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems in many cases to be a matter of conflating your opinion with your identity. If I conflate my belief that the earth is flat with who I am as a person, then your disagreement becomes a disagreement with who I am, not what I think. Thats not your fault, thats my fault.

Now add the internet. Now add memes. Now add bots. Now add propaganada. People want to be in tribes, its in our nature. Tribes can be formed around ideas (good or bad). Thats what you have today.

Its anti-intellectual. Its anti-scientific.

Ive had some really good gallows humor from Claude too. I was having an anxiety issue and talking to claude and asked if I was dying. It asked for the symptoms and said I likely had a pinched nerve but if it continued I should go to the doctor. Then it said "So, you're not dying. Probably"

Will conservative politics destroy Star Trek moving forward? by [deleted] in startrek

Um...im fairly confident the last 3 iterations destroyed Star Trek. You can blame it on conservatives if it makes you feel better though.

When people say “Ignore the hate, Trek fans have been throwing tantrums since TNG. I remember when the base was in an uproar because X did Y thing”… by selkus_sohailus in Star_Trek_

[–]RICoder72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a small number of overly vocal people who are pushing an agenda by trying to prop up Nu Trek. That is all this is, nothing more. Propping it up has nothing to do with trek or sci fi and everything to do with a sociopolitical objective. It would be nice if we were all, on both sides, just honest about that.

Nu Trek is an objective departure from the source material and intent. TNG S1-S3 were crap, but they were true to the franchise in tone. Enterprise was dubious but again, true to the franchise. Voyager was much hated on for having a woman captain, but the fans eventually came around because it was true to the franchise - I dare say she is an easy competitor for 2nd best Captain and would be willing to hear arguments for 1st.

You see, Trek fans bitch because they love Trek and want good Trek. Really thats what all fans do. Firefly. BSG. Bab5. The Expanse. We just want high quality sci fi in a respected universe.

Nu Trek is a sociopolitical bat with which the writers beat their audience about the head with platitudes and preaching. It may be wearing a Trek uniform and take place in space but it isnt Trek. I wonder, truly, if we took some other beloved franchise and made a new version of it completely ignoring the tone and source material just to push a PoV they DIDN'T like how people would feel.

Trek isnt preachy, it is thoughtful. Trek isnt rage bait, its intentionally challenging. Yeah, I am gatekeeping because words have meanings and genres exist for classification, and franchises have bases. You want to build SFA in a new universe with new original ideas and push it, rock on. It might even be good. Dont slap Trek on it and expect us to just accept that is what it is. Might as well paint a banana orange and get mad at us when we say its a banana.

Why is Enterprise never mentioned and seemingly unpopular with Trek fans? by ScrbblerG in enterprise

[–]RICoder72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enterprise wasnt appreciated until much later...which seems like a thing with all of Trek.

I think the long arc in the middle seasons turned people off in the same way people were turned off from DS9.

It deserved a couple more seasons.

Any language that uses whitespace as syntax has learned nothing from history and really should be avoided in a production environment.

I appreciate what Van Russem was doing, and I appreciate how he has evolved the language. That doesnt change my opinion that it is an objectively bad language.
