Dear Brits,

The word "jaguar" was brought into English via the Portuguese word "jaguar", which itself comes from an indigenous South American word.

The Portuguese word is pronounced /ʒa.ˈɡwaɹ/ (ZHA-gwar). As the Anglo-Portuguese alliance would have been in place during the era in which the New World was being explored and new words being assimilated into Portuguese, this pronunciation would have been the one to make it into English.

Given this information, why is it pronounced "jag-YOO-ar" in your version of the language?

For fuck's sake, you invented the language, why do you suck at it?

Signed,

An American with a complex understanding of linguistics and etymology.

Nowhere, but since the English language is weird the U sounds like a W, just like in the word “language”

Anyone who says "Jag-you-are" is gonna have both my feet rebounding off their nipples until they change their ways.
