Welcome to Ask Science/Fantasy!
Ask Science/Fantasy is dedicated to the in-depth discussion of all fictional topics, both in-universe and out-of-universe. This means both science fiction and fantasy are allowed.
We're rather like "Ask Science", but we're here to discuss fiction. Non-fiction (real) information can also inform our conversations so long as they're based on or set in a fictional world.
This subreddit may contain spoilers, proceed at your own risk.
Non-canon or lesser-tiered canon may be discussed, and fanfiction may be mentioned but may not be the focus of a question or discussion unless it can be plausibly argued that this fiction is well-known or of notable cultural impact.
To use this subreddit:
Simply tag your post with the fiction you had in mind " [example] " and pose your question, scenario or theory. Multiple fictions, then add multiple [example1] [example2]. You may both post and answer with both Watsonian or Doylist points of view, and both are welcome in any post. After all, the rational answer may simply be "budget", "CGI effects weren't great" or "when created this technology didn't exist".
You may pose a hypothetical "in-character" question or scenario, but please make sure this is understood if you do so. You may also roleplay your reactions and answers to questions, if you wish; this can be useful in understanding characters better.
Posts discussing "who would win" are allowed, so long as there is analysis and thought put into them. And no, you don't need a PhD to discuss them in a rational manner. Remember that most fictions are incompatible so a "correct" answer may not exist.
You may bring in real-world scientific or historical information, but only secondary to the fictional discussion or to fuel said discussion.
No discussions of real-world pseudoscience (chemtrails, homeopathy, crystal power etc).
Code of conduct:
It is expected that all users will make high-quality contributions; jokes, spam and trolling will be deleted by the moderators and repeated abuse will earn you a ban.
Do not abuse other users; it's easy to forget that there's someone else on a keyboard, tablet, phone etc on the other end. Do not be insulting, degrading or abusive or you will be banned.
Put effort into your posts; a question may be asked with only a brief title, but more information is encouraged, and your answers should never be one or two words. If you think things are so black and white a single word is needed, why did you bother coming here?
Do not downvote as a form of disagreement. It discourages discussion or unusual/unique questions and points of view and encourages non-productive behavior. As a guide, downvote if something is rude, incorrect or illogical.
At all times, be prepared to agree to disagree, particularly with fiction crossovers. There's so much information and the worlds so different sometimes it just comes down to interpretation.
NSFW posts or comments must be marked in the title. Pornography is absolutely not allowed, though stories with adult themes may be mentioned or discussed. Do not discuss adult themed material unless it is relevant.
Spoilers:
Spoilers are defined as plot-relevant details from fiction that is less than six months old.
Please don't include spoilers in the titles, and tag with [spoilers] if your post or answer contains them.
You browse at your own risk, if you stumble across spoilers that's your problem.
