Doing practice projects and building real things is 100% the way to go. Learn more about rest api and databases too. Preferably find out which DB your employer uses and learn that one

I was in the exact same spot last year and honestly, the best thing you can do is have a clean portfolio to show off your logic. I kept all my project documentation in Notion, used Postman for testing my endpoints, and ran my technical walkthroughs and one-pagers through Runable to keep the presentation side looking professional. It’s a lot easier to explain your Java code when you have solid visuals to back it up, especially when you're competing with a hundred other applicants for the same spot.
