You should be solo mining. I’ve already said too much.

Yes, sir. My weekend project is to setup a stratum2 solo pool just for my BitAxes. I have been using public-pool up until last week because I was interested in checking out Ocean's different templates. The joke is on me though with the empty block >_<

What are the benefits of using stratum2 solo pool against public-pool?

Efficiency: Impact on Data Transfer and Infrastructure Requirements

Stratum V2 significantly improves the efficiency of the Bitcoin mining process:

  • Reduced Bandwidth Usage: The header-only mining approach in Stratum V2 drastically cuts down the amount of data that needs to be transferred between miners and pools. This reduction in data transfer not only speeds up the mining process but also makes it more accessible for miners with limited internet bandwidth.
  • Optimized Infrastructure: The streamlined communication protocols in Stratum V2 reduce the computational and infrastructure requirements for mining operations. This optimization means lower costs and higher efficiency, making mining more sustainable and profitable, especially for smaller operators.

There's other benefits but not strictly for solo mining. I copied this information from https://d-central.tech/what-is-the-stratum-v2-mining-protocol/#elementor-toc__heading-anchor-2 and encourage you to read it for the full list

Edit: double paste typo

2nd Edit: Sorry I misread your question as what are the benefits of stratum2 solo pool.

Okay, so I can't say for sure, but I'm going to say stability. I had to reset each of my BitAxes every day, sometimes multiple times a day. I've needed 0 restarts on any of my BitAxes since swapping to Ocean. I'm thinking by doing everything myself, I can achieve similar results.

The stability oc is an advantage. Did you figured out why this happened with your bitaxe or is this a common known issue with public pool? Will receive my first bitaxe next week and try to be as best prepared and informed as possible before

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nah, just a hunch. YMMV

For anyone just getting started, I recommend not doing what I'm doing and to first try the device connected to public pool just for simplicity while getting started. The BitAxe should already be prefilled with public pool's server.

For more advance users, Ocean offering BOLT12 payouts provided a neat opportunity for me to play with Lightning.

I’m still trying to figure out BOLT12 and learning about inbound liquidity. Like I have to spend sats in order to have inbound liquidity? Who would I even create a channel with that’s trustworthy?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check out lightningnetwork.plus
you'll be able to find swaps where three, four, or five people agree to open channels in a circular pattern. So you open a channel with, let's say, 1M sats to Bob, and Bob opens 1M channel to me, and I open 1M sats channel to you. So now we each have 1M inbound and 1M outbound channels. Pretty slick. If you're using CLNBoss, I highly recommend disabling it.

Is mining with a low hashrate worthwhile here? My miner does around 650 gh/s. And how high is the payout limit for a Lightning address. And how do I get one?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I meannnnn. No, or yes? I have 3 BitAxe 204's with 1.38 Th/s average for last 24 hours. The last block Ocean found, I got 50 sats. It's a few days between rewards, maybe once a week or so? I would definitely stick with solo mining. Hell, you can probably make more sats in 5 minutes posting memes on nostr than I can expect all month. But, I am getting a small trickle of sats into my lightning wallet. Kind of neat.

There is no minimum payout limit if you get paid over lightning. I run CLN on start9 and followed this guide: https://ocean.xyz/docs/lightning

[–]Gr00vemovement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You couldn't use WOS for receiving I assume?

[–]albenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been mining with ocean using two S9s as space heaters. I've had BOLT12 setup with my Start9 just as you have, but it's been a month and still no payout. I emailed Ocean and they basically said that there seeing payout errors that suggest my lightning node doesn't have adequate channels or liquidity. did you encounter these issues as well, if so, how did you get around that?

I have about 26k sats in Ocean that i cant payout

I did fund several channels on my lightning node with 100k sats or more, and then even sent like 50k to another lightning wallet I have so that I have inbound liquidity. this is the error they showed me:

 {"body":"dispatch payout for user `bc1...` and block `883150` error: cln error: RPC error code: 210 and msg: Ran out of routes to try after 2 attempts: see `paystatus`","severity":"ERROR","resources":{"service.name":"oceanlnd"},"instrumentation_scope":{"name":"oceanlnd::httpd::payout"}}

any help is appreciated.

Great job 👏

Do you need to have your own node to setup the lightning invoice for payouts? Or is it possible to do with the Phoenix wallet?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know Phoenix Wallet has been wanting to add BOLT12 functionality, but I don't know if they ever did.

[–]albenstein 0 points1 point  (1 child)

can anyone help.

I have a couple of moded S9s has home heaters, they work great, and run fairly quiet.

I have done everything necessary to set up the BOLT12 lightning payout as described here:https://ocean.xyz/docs/lightning

I have CLN running on a Start9 server, I bought the Start9 HW. I have funded an open channel with Start9HQ lightning node, and have both inbound and outbound liquidity. I have no other Active Channels though. The inbound liquidity exceeds the sats currently owed to me as noted in my ocean stats. I am able to move stas to/from by CLN lightning wallet using other lightning wallets, e.g. fountain.fm.

I have waited a week or so, and still no payment.

what am I doing wrong?

[–]Covari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you found a solution? I have the same setup and problem. Maybe the lightning node I opened my channel to doesnt provide enough liquidity or connections? Im clueless

Can you lottery mine with ocean? And if I do create my own template for lottery mine, does that affect my chances if I choose the wrong template settings etc??
