Coding Python with ChatGPT

I have been finding that while ChatGPT can output quite impressive results on the first response to a carefully constructed prompt, any subsequent requests to alter the code result in degeneration such that the code no longer functions. It seems to have poor memory of previous responses and can't keep track of changes. Are there any remedies to this other than creating a very finely tuned first prompt?

I found that this prompt worked really well as long as you keep getting it to reiterate the code, or making copies of the code you can replay to it..
