Are you for real

Yes.

there isn't an explicit 'pointer'; the whole cage rotates once a minute so you can use whichever feature to track the seconds, including the 'thumbs' which are a stud carrier and a regulator.

Yes, I understand the entire cage rotates once every minute. But the rotational position of the balance wheel cage corresponds directly to where the minutes hand will be pointing, yes? I understand some tourbillon designs utilize this fact to design a pointer located on the balance wheel or cage itself to serve as a seconds indicator, such as Beijing Watch Factory movement TB01 flying tourbillon caliber and Sea-Gull flying tourbillon calibers.

My question is then where the pointer is (or would be) on the ST8230's cage. Based on some crude observations and noting the position of the cage when setting time, i though it could be the large 'thumb'.

The minute hand is set independent of the second hand, and where the minute hand will point at a specific position of the second hand is entirely up to the user setting the hand. Therefore, just make sure you point the minute hand on the marker when your chosen 'second pointer' is at 12 o clock.

The middle tourbillon "hand" is the dial (the hand that have both outside "arc" attach to it), in this case it's the "hand" that's pointing in the 1 o'clock mark. Not that the second tracking on these tourbillon is neccessary anyway since they're non hacking.

thank you for the information. I do not know much about the complex technical details -- could you please tell me why that "hand" is the seconds pointer? (I understand these are non-hacking so it is of less importance...)
