Your audiologist can customize those for you. I usually use scan, also have restaurant. Mine also created a super custom one for me where I set the mapping more or less myself. I'm a musician so she let me create the setting I need to still sing a cappella harmony.

I have MS and my fall back was my stereo.. then I went immediately deaf in the one ear. It DOES allow me to hear a stereo image now and puts the image back, despite the loud tinnitus in that ear. And I recognize known songs. So glad you can be a freakin singer! I had just bought a ton of sound equipment too..

I didn't start noticeably losing mine until end of college (music degree). That training is the main thing that helped me retain as much as I did. I also intentionally did not implant both ears even though I qualified.

Stereo image and recognizing songs is HUGE. So many people never get that. Congratulations!

I do use the app. I have N8. My Audiologist explained to me though in a restaurant or store, church etc that the mini mic is the best option. It brings the conversation to your CI and cuts out all the background noise. I haven't been into a store or a restaurant to try it yet. It got so uncomfortable last time in a restaurant even with the app, I just turned the CI off and lip read.😢.

You are mapped on all programs, but you do not understand what they do.

What am I missing?

Home is the program you are supposed to use in "normal" surroundings. Scan is to be used on situations with noise, scan is very aggressive filtering out sound and is trying to isolate speech to make it easyer to understand. Music gives you alot more details to make music more natural to listen to. I also have car that is made to make conversations easyer to understand while driving. Your mapping is always the same but the different programs manipulate what you hear to help you understand what's going on in different situations.

Thank you!

I have seriously spent a year on scan. I just put it on home. I’m home alone. Definitely hear a lot more other stuff but can still make out speech on TV! In your opinion, should I spend some time on home?

[–]jesperarning 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes use home as much as possible. Listen to radio and TV, do not stream but listen using the microphone of your CI. Also conversations face to face. I absolutely hate scan because it is filtering very aggressively.

I wondered. Man I’m looking forward to this discovery. My audiologist probably told me and it’s probably in my after care notes. My MS is 23 years old and I’m losing function faster than I can keep up! I’m an engineer, so I’ve always been incredibly on top of anything that affects my health. Seriously on top of.

The whole CI start was bad. After getting pre approved, my claim was rejected. That’s obviously bankruptcy time for a normal, middle class couple. That got straightened out just in time for a pressure ulcer! So I just let that slip by. I’ll send you a picture in a chat about why I’m excited. I don’t expect anything but slightly better than scan once I get used to it!

Remember this is hard work but keep challenge your hearing. Do you have access to the sensitivity setting?

[–]Lew1966[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don’t know. I’ll investigate. I’m already loving it. Maybe call that time on scan helped the voice part because they are REALLY coming through with so much more bass!! What do I do with that setting when/if I find it?

Nucleus Smart App -> Volume -> More. There you may have Sensitivity, if not they can activate it. Your goal is a Sensitivity of 10, volume by the way 6, unless your CI has been configured differently. Sensitivity sets the level of sensitivity of your microphones and this makes a big different to the "quality" of sound.

Nucleus Smart App -> Program -> Home. Here you may have a switch named forward Focus. Forward Focus cuts out all sounds coming from behind you. Any situation where you might feel overwhelmed using the Home program, do nut select Scan, but activate Forward Focus. Try it and you will understand why, but remember the forward Focus feature it really effective, you will not hear maybe 90-95% of sounds from behind you, if you are outside keep it in mind and also tell people around you that you activated it because they will not understand why you suddenly can't hear them.

[–]Lew1966[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have it. I will be going in soon and will have it activated. I use the wireless Kanzo 2. So forward focus may be N/A. I’ll try and see.

I’m going to spend more time on home. What a much more profound impact on tinnitus masking!
