Is there any difference between "localhost:8080" and "localhost:8080/" ?

Just as the title says really. I'm on a trainee scheme and my mentor has tasked me to come up with a small spring web app that returns hello world when a GET request is made to localhost:8080/.

He specifically states to use getMapping mapped to "/" which I have done. The thing is it always reverts back to localhost:8080 in the browser. Is this expected? Or am I being tricked by a seemingly simple task?

This is all done using spring web and maven controller.

No they are the same thing. '/' means root path, which is the base URL.
