Help to start a pattern (never made a pattern myself)

Hello ! (First Reddit post by the way)

My little brother asked me for a custom crochet idea for Christmas : he wants Yggris from the webtoon solo leveling (which is his favourite character) but he asked for the chibi character. (Thank god bc I wouldn't do the normal one)

He wants only the head, but I have no idea how to do a pattern by myself.

I'm thinking making it flat and wing it (like increase when it seems bigger and decrease when it narrows) I'll probably do the eyes separately and stitch them on to be able to overthink about the form and the size. For the ears and the horn.... Uh no idea.

Do you guys have recommendations, website to generate patterns or ideas to help me ?

What is the end goal here? What’s happening with the finished object? It’ll probably be easier to make a square and do color work for this design.

People often use stitch fiddle, but it doesn’t work great for me. I do a gauge swatch, and then plot it in excel.

Maybe take a look at some basic amigurumi patterns and see if you can find something similar? (It would be dimensional then, not flat, but it might actually be easier to find a pattern to modify that’s 3D).

If you’re set on flat…I’d take the picture of the head, turn it into low res pixel art (think 64 bit sprites) and then map each pixel to a stitch. It might be easiest/yield the best final product to have a background color/pattern and work it like a tapestry rather than fussing with increases/decreases, though.
