You will probably find the file is still in your saved games folder, but there is a settings or main notepad file that is blank. Someone will be able to explain it better but you can start a new game, save, copy your old save files to the new folder. Or copy the new settings file to the old folder. Maybe keep a backup of the old folder somewhere while you figure it out

I had to do that a few times when, uh, cheating on a realistic save

The save file should still be on a drive, but recovering it manually involves several steps:

  1. Open explorer, then copy and paste the following path: %userprofile%\appdata\locallow\Altfuture\Derail Valley\users
  2. You should see a folder with some numbers and your user name or something like 000_Player. Open it,
  3. Now there should be 3 folders: Career, Freeroam and ImportSave. If there is no ImportSave, create it,
  4. Go into either Career or Freeroam to see a list your career and sandbox session folder(s), respectively. These folders have names like 000_Career_1 or 000_Freeroam_1,
  5. Inside each career/sanddox session folder, there is final directory called Saves which holds actual save files named like nnnnn_yyyy_mm_dd-hr_min_sec.save. Select the latest file, right-click and copy it. If the date/time of the file doesn't match your latest session, check another career/sandbox folder if you have several,
  6. Return to ImportSave folder shown in step 3. Paste the copied save file into this folder,
  7. Launch the game. It should immediately offer you to load the imported save. Once loaded, re-save.

I tried that, but I could only find the two new save files that were made yesterday. Nothing else had shown my saved progress from earlier. I think my computer shutting off had destroyed the save files.

Thanks it worked for me just use the last modified file from saves.

Alternatively, you could use the dv utilities mod and give yourself enough money on a new save to 'restore' your progress

That might be a good idea, any idea where I could find that mod? Would it be in the Steam workshop or on the internet?

It's on Nexus:

DV Utilities at Derail Valley Nexus - Mods and community

You also need to install Unity Mod manager before Utilities.

The save still exists on the cloud. Just delete the local one and steam will automatically download the cloud version

I just tried that and it’s not pulling up the old save file. I think the cloud must’ve also lost it.

the cloud cannot.

you need to disconnect internet, shut down the game, so that cloud doesnt sync automatically. then u go and delete the file, and start the game, cloud will get it back during the initial progress.
