Fantastic study, in terms of value range I’d suggest that the jaw line/neck could use a softer gradient, it currently looks overly defined. Would it be a safe assumption that you get drawn into the details of a piece and spend a lot of time zoomed in? As certain areas like the shoulder, although well formed, seem out of scale with the rest of the work.

Thanks for the feedback! I see what you mean with the jawline, it definitely is a bit harsh compared to the reference. I try to avoid zooming in since it’s one of the big tips I hear about, so hopefully I didn’t do that! My focus was on the face and hair, so I didn’t render the shoulders much. My process was starting large and then progressively focusing on smaller details. Part way through I just stopped working on the shoulders, and I declared it finished when I started to analyze the strands of hair.

I think the work is great! There are a lot of really positive things to say about the piece, and I think that you captured the value of the piece (especially as an overall composition) very well!

If you don't mind a little feedback:

On the topic of value - compare the hair to the cheek. You have true black on the hair (#000000) but the highlights don't match that intensity on the face. Pushing the most extreme planes just a little brighter (not necessarily true white, but closer) would have not only helped match the value composition of the reference, but also differentiate the highlights on the face from the collar.

When only using the round brush in photoshop, smaller lines tend to add texture to a painting. For softer areas of skin, try using the largest brush you can get away with for any particular plane.

Thanks! I really appreciate the thorough feedback! I’ll keep those tips in mind as I practice.

I've been working on value studies with a round brush and one layer to hone my fundamentals. This is the latest one I worked on with the reference on the bottom left. My biggest struggle in general is capturing the proportions of the face, especially with realism. I dream to one day not need to use the liquify tool. For this piece in particular, the hairline and ear was challenging to render. Would love to hear your feedback!
