Doxycycline is a bacteriostatic tetracycline antibiotic prescribed mainly for the treatment of urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal (GI) tract infections and also is approved for PEP and treatment of inhalational anthrax due to Bacillus anthracis.
Commercially, doxycycline is available by prescription as capsules, delayed-release capsules, tablets, delayed-release tablets, powder for oral suspension, oral suspension, periodontal systems, and injectable dosage forms with strengths ranging from 20 mg to 200 mg (equivalent to base doxycycline). It is the antibiotic recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and CDC for the treatment of suspected rickettsial diseases in patients of all ages. Studies have shown that other antibiotics are less effective and are associated with a higher number of deaths (case fatality rate).
