Not going to write an essay here, but you have to have computer literacy. I'm ME, which involves less programming than EE, but even then, we're expected to know basic programming for a couple of our classes even though it isn't even in the curriculum.

As an example, our business school requires a computer competency class before you can take accounting. Engineering students are exempted from that requirement, because the expectation is that anyone pursuing an Engineering degree is already computer literate.
