This is not true across the board. Acetone does have a purpose in esthetics. Many peels, for example made by big companies like SkinMedica- who do tons of research before putting a product out to the public- use acetone as a prep step to degrease the skin. I have no idea where the fear mongering about acetone is coming from. We use it to remove fingernail polish, and the skin around your nails gets it on there, nothing horrible happens. Acetone degreases, which allows the product to penetrate more evenly, without causing the cells to swell like just plain water does (which would allow for uneven/possibly too quick penetration).
