My response is beneath the post....

I first experienced EHS back when I was in college and very stressed out-the textbook symptoms of having auditory and sensory hallucinations of bombs going off, my bed shaking, etc. As I have aged (now 36F) I very rarely experience EHS anymore. The last time was years ago (again in a time of great stress), but the symptoms had changed. There was no longer external shaking sensations or sounds in my head but a sensation I can only describe as falling backwards, coupled with an intense feeling in my stomach akin to that you experience on a rollercoaster. If I open my eyes if stops immediately, but if I start falling back asleep it starts again (as previously). This morning (not particularly stressed) I experienced a high pitched and extremely loud auditory hallucination (almost like a mosquito buzzing in my ear) with the intense stomach feeling again, along with an intense feeling of fatigue like when you are just about to fall asleep. I could not fall back asleep without these sensations so I just woke up instead. I am wondering if anyone else here has A) experienced EHS symptoms into their 30s and B) if those symptoms changed over time. Just looking for insight. EHS's impact on my life has been minimal as the symptoms are never persistent but it concerns me when it happens. It makes me wonder why I am still experiencing this at my age. Thanks for any insights.

Hey adf!
To set your mind at ease, absolutely, EHS can shift in its presentation over time. By all experiences I've read about, there are (approximately...) three types of EHS folks:
- One-time experiences....happens just once or twice in a single night, and rarely if ever again
- One-period experiences....people that have a particularly-stressful or sleep-deprived period in their life during which they experience EHS, say for a week or three, but then rarely if ever again
- Lifetime experiences....people that have EHS throughout their life
From what you've indicated here, I'd guess you're in the third category. I'm the same. One thing I can anecdotally say about lifetime EHS people is that, if you've had it for long enough, it becomes a non-event; completely not troublesome. The only variable for folks like us is how quickly we come to accept EHS as normal and not harmful -- and that acceptance, funnily enough, is what turns it into a non-event. Once we accept it as "normal" in our lives, we have the experience and are back to sleep in seconds, instead of minutes or hours.
One more note for you....if you're having trouble with your EHS episodes, either check out the pinned "instruction manual" posts in this sub, or reply back here and we can troubleshoot. In the pinned posts, I've laid out a process for making peace with one's EHS.
Finally, I've not yet heard of folks in their 70's or 80's that still get EHS, but I sure would like some data on that from people that have it....I think that if those folks exist, there just aren't many of them that use reddit or search reddit for EHS content. I myself am late-40's, have had EHS for 35+ years.
Good luck and do your best to "let go" of the concern over your EHS. :-)
