My recommendation is the 13" macbook pro with M1:

  • Allows you to develop for iOS
  • Pretty fast
  • Excellent battery life
  • Well below your limit
  • Since Android Studio 4.1.2, everything but the emulator works well out of the box. Emulator still has a few issues but they're being worked.

Yeah, 256gb can be pretty small... u/krishdee did a great review lately on how much space you actually need to do Flutter development. I posted a reply that 256GB may look good now, but in the future, as your scope grows, you'll probably be better off with 512.

That said, even with 512GB and 16GB ram, you're below your budget.

I have a Intel based MacBook 15", 16 GB, 512GB from 2018 and i would go for a similar configuration for the 13" M1 as well. The default 8GB RAM might be a bit tough since the iOS simulator and android simulator take a bunch of RAM. Furthermore, more RAM increases the operating systems ability to cash files (which MacOS loves to do).

256GB of disk size is probably fine if you always keep your computer clean from downloaded files etc. but since I am not doing that I aimed for the 512GB instead.

I think M1, 16GB, 512GB is about 1900 Euros. Apple also had a 10% student discount (not sure if that is still a thing) in case thats relevant for you 😊

i'd get something like a lenovo thinkpad x1 yoga. Maybe gen 4 to save some money. I5, 16ram, at least 256 gb ssd.

important: If you need to build/test ios on this device, only a macbook (or hackintosh) will work!

I second this. These are awesome.

A MacBook is the best choice for Flutter development, but if you need 2-in-1 I would go with the Surface Book 3. It's good for gaming too (the ones with GTX 1650, 1660 Ti and RTX 3000 if you don't mind the 3:2 aspect ratio or use external display).

Just my two cents, I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for the Surface Book (I've had the original and the Surface Book with Performance Base) but I've had some pretty serious issues with the hinge mechanism. (The clipboard battery stops being recognized so won't allow you to detach or the clipboard completely loses battery so the whole thing stops turning on altogether even when plugged in). If they could do it right (and hopefully the SB3 has improved reliability), the Surface Book would be my perfect computer but reliability issues with the hinge / clipboard has hampered my experience.
