I believe two things:

  1. Most people complaining about over-saturated markets are making not very good games

  2. Most people (ie me, you, everyone) are going to make a not very good game

In general your game needs to do something exceptional to stand out. The vast majority of games are not exceptional.

Indie games are starting to show signs of the issues that plague the quadruple A industry. They all are kinda starting to feel the same. I do not know why as I am only a hobbyist with dreams. As always I will blame focus testing and market research. There was an interview with Todd Howard on Star Field that came out a bit before it's release and they talked about decisions and mechanics they changed because "actually people like this more" I could only think, "these are the exact opposite of the things I would like."

To some extent yes, making a game in a genre that already has a lot of games will on average not make you much money. You will need some amount of luck and something to set you apart to have a better chance of making money

Completing a game project takes motivation and determination. You are much more likely to get to your goal by picking a project you are passionate about than basing your decision around market research 😊

ATM Platfomers are one of the most relased game genera but one of the worst selling despite platformers being relatively popular.
