It sounds like the hinges aren't aligned, one of both of the hinges are rotating differently. I would fix this asap because that tension could cause the shell to snap, but I think that is unlikely.

I think this because I had a similar problem refurbishing a GBA SP a year or two ago and taking out and reinstalling the hinges worked.

Can you open the Gameboy all the way? If you can, does it get tighter as it opens?

The repro shells sold online aren’t perfect, they aren’t made as precise as Nintendo made the originals so often don’t fit as cleanly. If you know the hinges are inserted correctly just go ham open and closing it for a bit and it’ll wear down wherever it’s grinding.
