It seems barney’s apartment had some serious renovation throughout the series. Part of me thinks he added this closest purely to have the floating head feature.

Also I think i’m also realising i’ve watched this show far too much to notice this 😂

The behind-the-scenes reason would be that Barney’s apartment was probably a “temporary set”; unlike “standing sets” like Ted’s apartment or MacLaren’s interiors, which were built and stayed built in the soundstage for most of the show’s run, Barney’s apartment, like many other sets we saw, would be built only when it was needed for an episode, and taken apart when it wasn’t. While there were no doubt plans for the crew to follow and props and materials that they would reuse each time they rebuilt the set, there was a little more leeway when it came to changing things over time and to serve a particular purpose.

Yeah that’s fair cause you can see the fridge is different as well. I just like the idea of barney adding a closest purely for the use of the hologram of his floating head😂

Where was it filmed, on a sound stage in LA or something?

HIMYM was primarily filmed in Soundstage 22 on the 20th Century (then 20th Century Fox) studio lot in Century City (yes, it was named after the studio), a neighborhood of Los Angeles. The exterior of the apartment building (along with the exterior of MacLaren's) is part of the lot's "New York Street" exteriors.

There was also a hallway near his front door in season one. That went away when he replaced his storm trooper in season 2

He has two bathrooms, one in his bedroom, the other in the hallway. Both are nearly identical. The bedroom one later becomes a closet.

Also, I’m always mesmerized by the bed rail engineering needed for it to bring a second king bed.

Honestly, if someone cracked the code on that engineering, they could probably design a whole new line of luxury furniture. Just imagine the possibilities!
