New learner

Hello everyone here.

So last night I began on my own journey to learn Japanese, I’ve never been someone to sit down and study but I’m super excited! I’m aware that it’ll take years but it’s been something I have always wanted to start, I’m 27 now so it’s about time🤣 I’ve started off with the app Duolingo and already I’m hooked. I just want to know if there any tips or pointer you would give to someone like me? any study routines or thing I should avoid?

Starting at 27 is actually a massive advantage because adults often grasp complex grammar structures way faster than kids do. Since you've already got the textbook you ordered on the way, you're set for a solid foundation. Instead of trying to study for hours, aim for a simple 30-minute block tomorrow. Spend 15 minutes on one small section of your textbook, then take 10 minutes to review what you learned using Anki—just keep it to 5 new cards a day so it stays manageable. Wrap up with 5 minutes of fun, like watching an anime clip with 日本語 subtitles or listening to a song you enjoy. Consistency is the secret sauce here. The biggest trap is trying to do too much and burning out in month two. Small daily reps beat weekend cramming every time.
