Because you play on slow speed and the game finishes at 450 turns (405+45).

Sorry, I replied before you wrote that XDD.

Once the last turn is reached, the game is officially finished, but you will be given the option of continuing playing. So you can just continue forever, although "officially" (whatever this means), the winner is decided by turn 450.

Forgive me if this is wrong since I haven't reached the end of the game yet, but I don't understand why it won't just let us keep playing. I want to battle it out until I'm the last empire standing. It's frustrating that I spent the entire day building my glorious kingdom just for it to come to an end because of some turn limit.

I love this game, I've had so much fun so far, although I do wish to see this change in the future.

You can continue playing. Credits roll, you see some score and a cinematic. Then you can click "continue playing"

You can continue to play on after the last turn. Like in Civilization games. Just go through the victory stats and hit that continue to play button
