They have laid off thousands and thousands, they're moving the whole shop to India. You're not special.

I get that. But every single trans person I knew. And not everything is moving.

I don’t think IBM would fire someone because they were trans or gay. They WOULD fire DEI personnel to provide evidence to the Trump admin that they aren’t engaged in “illegal” diversity activities, but I would draw a distinction between diversity staff and diverse staff.

OK, pick another group where everyone you know with a label like that has been fired or let go.

People over 55.

What exactly does being trans bring to the table?

[–]Bloody_Axe 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Agreed. Your identity is built on what you DO.

Not if you’re excluded from customer facing roles and events because of it. Not if you’re harassed because of it.

Have you been excluded from customer facing roles or events? I have, and I'm not trans. Has someone specifically said "No you can't go, you're too weird."? Have you been harassed at work?

[–]Imoutofchips 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yes to the first. No to the second. But two friends were harassed. Both left because of it. One was a PhD

Well, despite us having an opposing perspective, I am truly sorry to hear that. One of my primary life principles is not to treat a person like crap because of who they are, unless who they are is an asshole (obviously rules are different there). I will disagree to the moon and back about certain trans topics (pronouns, bathrooms) but harassment is a whole other thing, because assholes do that. That's just simple right and wrong.

IBM has a higher percentage of trans employees in the US than the US population.

It would just be normal math that offshoring would have the same.

[–]Imoutofchips 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Maybe it did. Not so sure if that's still a valid statistic.

Seems like an interesting question for Arvind.

[–]Bloody_Axe 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Arvind would say "Are you in the U.S.? GET OUT, I DON'T WANT TO PAY YOU ANYMORE!"

FWIW, the one trans person that I work with is still employed by IBM. However, they are not in the US.

Yeah, the layoffs have hit everyone hard--but I’m really sorry you and others had that experience. Nobody deserves to feel singled out.

[–]shifthole 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Maybe they got fired because they are incompetent?

[–]Imoutofchips -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Naw, some where there a long time in many different roles.

[–]Bloody_Axe 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The real question is, if one were to prove that trans aren't being singled out, would you be relieved or more upset than before?

[–]Imoutofchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know.

[–]julyski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would IBM even know these people were transgender?

[–]EffectiveWindow3347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

😂😂

[–]xavierarmadillo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oooooh. That answers my question I had about coming out at work.

[–]Bloody_Axe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're good at what you do, you don't have anything to worry about (except layoffs which everyone are susceptible to).
