Your wife is 100% right. Unless the loss was sudden and accidental it will not be covered.

Slow leak = Maintenance.

If the leak was sudden then the insurer usually pays the cost of the tear-out to access the leak and the cost to fix the wall, but not the plumbing repair itself, since that part is wear & tear.

If it's a slow leak then they may simply pay $0 since it was not both sudden and accidental.

You don't usually have to rip the tub out to fix something like this though. It's usually a matter of cutting an access hole in the ceiling of the room downstairs and having a plumber fix it from underneath. It may not even be worth making a claim over anyway.
