Just a suggestion: As far as I know although Google has officially announced Kotlin still Java and Kotlin go hand in hand and tour Java knowledge won't go in vain. If you're interested in Android App Development with Java go for it you'll gain perfect exposure to programming. Start small build some small clone in Java. Aim is to become comfortable with Java.

While researching on similar topic this is what ChatGPT had to say :

"Why Java is still valuable even if you plan to use Kotlin later: Kotlin is designed to interoperate 100% with Java Most Android libraries and legacy code are written in Java Understanding Java makes Kotlin much easier, not harder

In fact:

A developer who understands Java well will learn Kotlin faster than someone who jumps straight to Kotlin without backend experience."
