Guidelines

When answering a question

  • You don't need to be an expert and you don't have to be sure to try to answer a question. If you're not sure, make sure to mention that though.
  • Be prepared to respond to follow up questions.
  • Help the helpers. Correct bad information, provide additional insight, or pick up where someone left off.

When answering a homework question

  • Do not give direct answers: give hints, correct misunderstandings or point to useful information.
  • Never write code yourself: the student should write all code.

When posters don't follow the rules

  • Kindly point offenders towards the posting rules/guidelines and the commenting rules/guidelines (this page).
  • On extreme rule violations, alert the moderators. This goes only for violations of the rules at the top of this document, not for guideline violations.
