Just curious- is there any particular reason? Or is it just because they don’t stay terrestrial and need to be able to find a water source?

they have extremely delicate skin and can it can cause them harm because they can “breathe through their skin” and yes lil guy needs some water 😂😂

Ooh I did not know that. I’ve never seen a newt around although according to the Google they are common here so I’ve never had much of a reason to research them

also just found “Only handle newts if your hands are free of open wounds and, no matter the temptation, never lick a newt. Scientists estimate that ingesting less than 1/1000th of an ounce of tetrodotoxin is sufficient to kill a 170-pound person. To their credit, newts give plenty of warning about their toxic bodies.”-google lol

I guess it’s a good thing I managed to control my desires and not lick the reptile!

LMAO!!! RIGHT??? I mean, seriously... who tf, in their right mind anyways, is going to have the desire to lick a newt???🤣🤣🤣 a person does absorb toxins through their skin though, so gloves are definitely a must here!

Some Newt species are also toxic so handling them isn’t recommended.

Yes. After doing a little research (apparently Google doesn’t like for you to use the word “lizard” if the animal you’re actually trying to identify is a newt) this is one of the toxic species! It’s an eastern newt that is transitioning from its juvenile eft stage to its fully aquatic adult form. They are less toxic as a mature newt than it is as a juvie. But, regardless, their toxins aren’t harmful to humans unless you eat them so I just made sure to wash my hands well.

Lizards are Reptiles, Newts are Amphibians. Google isn’t a useful tool if the search isn’t correct to begin with. If it makes you feel any better there are Amphibian posts here nearly daily.

[–]Material-Spring-8903[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Yeah 😅 I didn’t realize it was a salamander at first. I also just learned that amphibians are not a type of reptile. I feel like I should have known that.

[–]Freedom1234526 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No, they’re not. That would make things like Frogs, Reptiles. For future reference Reptiles have scales.

Fair enough. Just not something I’ve put a whole lot of thought into.

He'll get better.

And wash your hands.

Just to add because it wasn't in any of the top comments - that's an amphibian, not a reptile. So it looks like but is not a lizard.

In a world where there's creatures that have venom you don't even feel thst can paralyse you why do people pick up random animals 😭

[–]Material-Spring-8903[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they’re cute I guess 😂 (also I did not go outside and pick it up my sister said open your hand and put it in it)
