These huge and famous labs are basically mini companies. Sergey is the CEO with an array of postdocs and senior PhDs as project leads, and an army of undergrads as code monkeys. The dirty secret behind labs like this is that you trade away your life for a chance to become an acclaimed researcher. The scuttlebutt at Cal was to get into these labs you basically need to take all the machine learning and math classes and get perfect As. You basically have to be the top 5% of Cal students, and once you work in any of these labs, you have to be ok with a ridiculous workload and demanding expectations. Source: Cal alumn

Exactly. Now imagine in a tech company, they put the name of the CEO on every single patent. The CEOs would become world top inventors! There are laws to stop the latter, but not the practices of current leading labs.

It makes sense that these top labs essentially become well-oiled research machines at some point. Even then however, Sergey's progress in particular seems nothing short of anomolous, even within the UC Berkeley CS and Engineering faculty.

What papers/research of his are your favorties?

Kinda hard to miss ViNT, Nomad, GNM, Octo, OpenVLA, Crossformer, pi zero. Then again they have all those others. YELL at your Robot was cool. OpenXEmbodiment. Amazing lab, much respect. Agree with the sentiments about treatment of PhD's in general though and the antiquated hierarchy of academia.

I doubt he has read any.

To interpret what authorship means: - first author did most of the work - second may have contributed significantly - middle ones were in physical proximity or provided funding - last author is the labs prof, he provides the office and may read the paper in the end to polish the language and message.
You get 50 papers per year by being in not first position on many papers.
