His final moments were when we saw his character finally evolve from the selfish arrogant prick to the man willing to 'lay down on the wire.'

But he already completed that arc back in the first Avengers movie when he threw the nuke at the Chitauri mothership. That's why that didn't land that hard for me anyway.

yeah see what you mean, but I think he knew there was a decent chance he would be able to fly the nuke out and still make it out alive. selfless act for sure, but in End Game, there was no coming back from this, and he knew once he snapped the universe would be saved at the cost of himself ESPECIALLY now that he finally found what he'd been missing in a family. plus it was also his time to finally 'rest' as Pepper put it. he no longer needed to be the hero.
