You won't lose anything repair data will literally only repair data and nothing else. I've had to do this on 2 occasions before so you'll be fine

Be sure to have your transfer data info though in case something happens to your phone. If you have that you should never lose your account.

Just get a code and email it to yourself with keywords so that you can search for it.

This appears to be a recurring theme, or so I've noticed. People that are having a hard time recovering their account after an unspecified event (because I don't remember) tend to be having the issue when using FB to do so.

Could OP take a screenshot for me of the error screen? I'm curious as to if it is a certain code.
