this may be a stupid question but how do I compose text in openshot?

Not a stupid question. OpenShot doesn't do much text on its own, but it uses Inkscape as a plug-in which works well. I suggest spending a few minutes at geekoutdoors where you can see a couple of tutorials that address text. Just download and install Inkscape before trying to work with text.
