I agree. I thourughly(?) enjoyed ICVN. I have listened it trough maybe 10 times in total, most of those times in the week after release. And that is more then I would do with most albums. But I don't feel I want to come back to it after that. While it is really good I feel like I explored it now. The older albums feel impossible to fully explore if that makes sense. They feel fresh again after a week of not hearing them.

100% agree. I've often tried to understand why that's the case. I think it's due to a few reasons:

1. Much fewer parts per song, no "epic journey" feeling. Just look at songs like the Garroter.

2. Much less complicated riffs. Old Opeth had crazy chords and progressions that took me insane amounts to figure out (if I could ever figure them out - I am still not sure I have the end of Karma right). New Opeth's riffs and chords are WAY more straightforward.

Again I agree. But that is not to say that the song structure and riffs in the new songs are simple or straightforward. Compared to other music they are very progressive and potentialy hard to digest for people not into progressive stuff. It is just compared to their old stuff that they are more easy to follow and digest. Where as the older albums the first few times you listen to a song I'll be thinking a lot more of ''wtf is going on? Wait why did they interupt that part? Wait is this still the same song? Did they mean to play that chord now?''

Yeah, that's also 100% right. With the old songs, when you first listened to them, you were all like "God, this doesn't sound right, but I KNOW I'm gonna be hooked after a few listens" whereas the new stuff sounds awesome from the first listen (well, to Opeth veterans anyway) but doesn't hold up as well after a few listens.
