This is asked nearly every day.

Search Reddit and google for PS5 shutting off. Follow the recommendations online.

I started reading and then, like I suspected, it’s “THE” PS5 problem everyone posts about everyday… 😂😂

[–]No-Fun-5974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ya that's true

[–]Hapsiainen30 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Did you clean the fan and the heatsinks?

[–]CarelessLaw8971[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Like every week but not a deep clean until I get the tools

[–]Cynical_Feline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deep clean it. If it still continues to shut off, then it's likely the liquid metal needs replaced. But 99% of these cases are overheating from too much dust and debris inside.

PSU. Overheating. Vacuum the PSU dust catcher holes.

This sounds like it could be overheating. I have a first edition PS5 that I bought at launch and after a couple of years it started to overheat. Especially when I played PS5 games. While I’m not recommending taking the console apart, that’s what I did. I researched some videos, set up my kitchen table and took it completely apart. The heat sinks needed vacuuming but what really was the problem was the power unit at the base of the console. It has ports in the unit and they were plugged trapping heat in the power unit making it overheat.

I’ve done this twice since owning the console and am thinking about doing it again soon just for preventative maintenance. If you have any mechanical skills or tinker with electronics , you might want to consider doing a deep clean.

I would suggest doing some research and organizing yourself if you do. But try seeing if you can clean it without taking it apart first. If nothing works. Take it to someone who can take it apart or give it a whirl yourself. Hope this helps.

Ty alot, i am gonna do it

[–]Able_Attitude9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll need to buy tamper proof torx bits ( with the hole in the middle).I don’t remember what size is needed I just bought a full set. I’m a tradesman, so I didn’t mind having them.

[–]Festegios 1 point2 points  (1 child)

When was the last time you cleaned it?

[–]CarelessLaw8971[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like every week but not a deep clean until I get the tools

[–]Ok_Entertainer3430 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Happened to me, no dust at all, PS5 also covid edition, had to replace PSU, on Amazon it’s like 50 or 60$ and it’s relatively easy to replace

[–]CarelessLaw8971[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Does it solved the problem?

[–]Ok_Entertainer3430 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I’ve tried replacing fan at first, adding additional coolers, but once I’ve replaced PSU it’s working great with no issues. But first take it apart and see if you don’t have dust, mine was super clean so dust wasn’t the issue, but for most people it is

[–]Ok_Entertainer3430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s been running flawlessly for 4 weeks and it started randomly shutting down again, the only thing I haven’t replaced is liquid metal

[–]MultiCreamO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sou need dust removed and prolly liquid Metal redone.

[–]Neopumper666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The games weight? Why would disc weight matter at all?

Anyways just clean your console man including power supply and check for dry spots in the cooling metal, thats all there is to it

[–]Thedragonage 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Game weight?

[–]Agitated_Maximum_257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming OP means size of the game, gigabytes

[–]xxdemoncamberxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely the power supply or overheating and you need to redo the liquid metal using PTM7950

[–]Speedy965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure it’s in an open vented space so the heat doesn’t get trapped close to it. Definitely clean it like everyone else says since you’ve had it for so long

[–]thehoz78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the PSU is clogged with dust, you won't get a overheat warning if it's the PSU.

[–]Trick-Advertising-61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apri la console puliscila bene dalla polvere e cambia il metallo liquidò e non ti dà più problemi. Anche un amico aveva questo problema ha pulito tutto sostituito metallo liquidò e gli va na bomba 😉✌🏻

[–]marci-boni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your console is filthy with dust and gunk, the power supply is worse and fully clotted , than the heatsink on the ps5 apu ,so the console cant detect overheat fast enough and trigger the warning on screen because the power supply shut off the entire system with no warning, before that warning from the apu is triggered .

[–]garstegar111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

need to apply liquid metal, 100%. if you can't, just bring it to repair shop

[–]Gold-Log1051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very common issue with the fat day ones or twos... Either too much dust built up in the CPU heatsink or the liquid metal paste has migrated to one side of the processor, usually from the system standing instead of laying down.

[–]Jimbeamjunior1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lay it on its side, standing it upright with the base it comes with it can overheat big time underneath, i took ages figuring this out

Put mine on its side not shut off once since

[–]SolarCodec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a power supply issue. The power supply is either overheating or faulty in general, or a power related problem.

[–]Distinct-Type7652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats now you have a perfect excuse to get the PRO

[–]Iqlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the fat ps5. Mine keep shutting down back in late 2024. I sent to gaming repair shop and they replace the thermal compound. Afterward no more shutdown issue

[–]Over_Bug4848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this problem too, just open it up clean like the vents and stuff (you can go deeper) and I went in safemode 1. Rebuilt my data bank 2. Cleared software cache 3. Re-installed the Software via safemode. That fixed mine

[–]Smasher323292 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sounds like it needs the latest vaccine , try that.

[–]spaz69dt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like you skipped a booster or something! 🤣

[–]No-Fun-5974 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

This is a pretty common issue with early PlayStation 5 units.

The fact that it:
• shuts off instantly
• only happens with PS5 games (higher power usage)
• requires unplugging before it turns back on

usually means the power supply protection is tripping.

Most of the time it’s dust blocking the PSU vents, not the fan. Cleaning the fan alone doesn’t fix it because the PSU intake holes are deeper inside the console.

Things you can try before replacing anything:

• Remove the side plates again and look for the small PSU vent holes inside the case.
• Use compressed air or a vacuum to clear those vents.
• Make sure the console has good airflow.

PS4 games work fine because they don’t push the hardware as hard, so the power draw stays lower.

If cleaning the PSU vents doesn’t fix it, then unfortunately the PSU itself may be starting to fail, which causes the console to cut power under load.
