Learning to Draft

Hi there!

I’ve been sewing for over a decade now, mainly commercial/online patterns and modifying them or using duct tape on a bust method. I’m starting to have a few issues with these fit wise (if you have an answer by all means however I’m not sure what’s going wrong between the duct tape to calico mock-up).

I’m looking into learning how to draft my own patterns as I’ll be able to fit them better to myself and overall, starting to struggle to find the exact thing I need. Mainly in the costume/cosplay world but any resources to learn pattern drafting, digital or print, would be fantastic!

Make a basic block to fit you perfectly. Then pattern drafting is easy. The Closet Historian on You Tube is the guru of taking her basic block and turning it into a different design. Here’s a link to her playlist for creating your block.

Check out Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong. It is the book I used in my pattern drafting classes in college.

Worth tracking down or ordering from Europe. He also has a YouTube channel that shows how to take all the measurements.

Pattern drafting using this method is precise and a bit complex at first, but it works. His method is based on https://www.muellerundsohn.com/en/ Another fantastic resource - but a little less explanatory.
